Destination Cure Raises $300K for Multiple Sclerosis Research Leading up to the Marine Corps Marathon
Destination Cure Hosts Third Annual “Strides to Beat MS” to celebrate MCM and its Ongoing Fundraising Efforts
Alexandria, Va.―November 5, 2004―Destination Cure, a national non-profit organization dedicated to raising money solely for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) research, raised approximately $300,000 in donations in the month leading up to its participation in the 29th Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) on October 31. One hundred percent of the funds raised will go directly to MS researchers.
“Destination Cure is an important ally in our battle against MS,” said Stephen G. Waxman, M.D., and Ph.D., and the Chairman of Neurology at Yale University School of Medicine. “Its dollars help us test ideas, launch new pilot projects, purchase much-needed equipment, and carry out research that propels our program forward in its battle against MS.”
John Guandolo, the founder of Destination Cure and a runner in the MCM said, “We’re so grateful to our individual contributors and corporate sponsors for helping researchers get closer to finding a cure for MS. And we’re so proud of the seven Destination Cure runners and other volunteers who helped with the race. Thank you so much for making a difference.”
“You have a lot to think about while running twenty six miles,” said Marine Corps Major, Joe Fagan. “So when the running got tough in the MCM, I thought about the pain people with MS experience on a daily basis and I knew that any pain I felt during the MCM paled in comparison. I will continue to run marathons and participate in other fundraising events until we beat MS.”
Major Fagan will also run the New York Marathon and the JFK 50 for Destination Cure, with all three events occurring within a 20-day period.
Destination Cure MCM runners included: Sara Beth Donovan, Tim Donovan, Joe Fagan, John Guandolo, Cameron Taylor, John Schieb and Steve Grass who sprained his ankle at mile three but continued on, running the remaining twenty three miles and finishing under four hours—the best time for the Destination Cure team. Corporate sponsors of Destination Cure MCM included: Gold sponsors —Communications-in-Print and Clyde’s Restaurant Group (this Group also donated services at F. Scotts for the upcoming Destination Cure celebration; Silver sponsors —Bethesda Mavericks, ValueWeb and Network Solutions; and Bronze sponsors—Colorworks Promotions and Stew Smith, author of “Maximum Fitness.”
